Dongnaeeupseong Fortress - 동래읍성지

The Dongnaeeupseong Fortress, situated in Dongnae-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea, has a rich historical significance. In Korea's tradition, town wall-fortresses were built for defense against invasions. Dongnae, once home to borough-states like Geochilsanguk, Chilsanguk, Jangsanguk, and Dongnoguk after the Samhan period, is believed to have had walls erected for protection dating back to that time. Although historical records indicate the wall's repair in 1021 during King Hyeonjong's reign in the Goryeo Dynasty, the fortress gained prominence during the Japanese invasions in 1592. It became a primary target alongside the Busanjinseong Fortress, resulting in the loss of General Song Sang-hyeon and countless lives of officials, troops, and civilians during the Siege of Dongnae. Reconstruction and expansion in 1713 increased the fortress's circumference to 5,240 meters (17,190 ft), featuring gates like Jihuiru (east), Simseongnu (west), Muuru (south), and Eunillu (north). Presently, restored structures within the walls include the north gate with its fortification, Dongjangdae and Seojangdae, Bukjangdae, Insaengmun (Gate), Chiseong wall, and fortified small walls around a gate.
