The Dominican Monastery was founded on its present premises in 1246. The goal of the Dominican monks was to consolidate the power of the Catholic Church and to spread Christianity. The buildings of the monastery connected to each other by ambulatories formed a closure around a quadrangular yard. The monastery was completed over a long period of construction. The monastery was closed in 1525 in the course of the Reformation. The premises were given to a school, a hospital and an arsenal. In 1531 there was a fire in the monastery after which some rooms became a private property and were restored for various purposes. Part of the buildings was neglected and remained in ruins. In 1954-1955 archaeological excavations were carried out in the courtyard of the monastery. After the excavations, restoration started. The visitor can see the preserved ruins, archaeological finds and some work of Tallinn stonecutters from the 16th and the 17th centuries.
