The development of Opatija harbour can be traced back to 1820. This is when it was marked on the first cadastral plan of Opatija as Port Herdt, together with a small pier. In 1869, ships regularly berthed in Opatija, and in 1884 a permanent line to Rijeka was introduced. In the 1880s, other goods arrived at the Opatija pier, such as petroleum from the Rijeka refinery. In those years, the construction and expansion of the pier was continued by Southern Railways, even if larger ships initially had to dock at a distant buoy, where passengers were picked up by barkajoli boatmen. A larger pier was marked on the 1897 plan as 'mooring for steamships' and 'for boats'. Expansion work, which was intensified that year, lasted intermittently until 1914, when the pier more or less obtained its present appearance. The building, which today houses the Harbour Master's Office, a bar and a restaurant, was built for the Hungarian-Croatian Joint Stock Maritime Company of Rijeka after lengthy negotiations with the Maritime Administration in Trieste in 1901 or 1902. It originally served as a ticket office and passenger waiting room, and later as the Delegazione di Spiaggia (port office), Costiera steamship ticket office, customs house, and various eating establishments. Today, the Opatija pier is the maritime centre of the town. This is the place where tourist excursion boats dock and where new generations of sailors acquire their sailing skills, and award-winning members of the Opatija Sailing Club practise. Here, the locals take their boats out of the sea and carefully prepare them for the following season. This is also one of the centres of the town's culinary scene and nightlife, with several restaurants and cafes. A combination of old and new, tradition and modernity, sea and land: the harbour of Opatija offers all of this.
