Piața Sfatului - Council Square

  • Brasov

The Council Square, known as Piața Sfatului in Romanian, formerly referred to as Marktplatz in German, and as Főtér or Tanács tér in Hungarian, is situated within the historic heart of Brașov, Romania. Its historical significance dates back centuries, having received the official right to host markets in 1520. However, it has served as the venue for weekly and annual markets since as early as 1364. Encircled by 18th and 19th century residences, many of which stand as historical landmarks, the square exudes an old-world charm. Up until 1892, two wells graced the square's landscape. Dominating the square's landscape is the former Council House (Casa Sfatului), a construction from 1420 that occupies the central space. Presently, this edifice accommodates the Brașov County Museum of History. Encompassing the central square is the picturesque pedestrian-only Republicii street, along with notable attractions like the Black Church, the former Council House, indoor and outdoor terraces adorned with restaurants, the Orthodox Church, Casa Mureșenilor museum, the Museum of Urban Civilization, and Hirscher House. Local lore has it that the offspring of the Pied Piper of Hamelin (from Germany) who were led underground emerged near this very square in Brașov. During the era of communism, the Council Square underwent a name change, being referred to as 'Piața 23 August' (23 August Square).
