Church of the Holy Mary of Consolation

  • Home
  • Slovenia
  • Piran

The church, originally constructed in 1439 by the Brotherhood of Holy Mary with a Girdle, underwent significant reconstruction in the early 17th century, erasing evidence of its original form. In 1570, the medieval church of St. Michael was integrated into the structure. The main façade resembles that of the Piran parish church, featuring a bell gable on the northern side of the gable roof. Inside, the ceiling boasts decorative molding, including a medallion of Divine Providence, along with shell, leaf, and pigeon motifs. The marble main altar, attributed to G. Sartori, holds a Byzantine-like icon of Holy Mary with a Child from the 13th century, flanked by winged angels. The church's prized artwork includes Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's Holy Mary with a Girdle, now in Italy since 1940. Notable features include 18th-century walnut wood wall-coverings, pews, and confessionals, as well as Brustolon's wooden-carved frame above the main entrance, showcasing paintings of Holy Mary of Good Counsel and Holy Mother with a Child. The church's paintings, predominantly by Venetian artists from the 18th century, depict scenes such as The Procession St. Pulcheria in Chalkoprateia and the Vocation of St. Augustine. Additionally, nine tomb plates and a Brotherhood plate from 1720 suggest the presence of numerous tombs within the church.
