The Castle of Kaninë is located in the village of the same name, 3km from the Bay of Vlora, on a hill 379 meters high. Kaninë in the antiquity period was founded as a fortified coastal center of the Amantes tribal community, which played a strategic role in controlling the Bay of Vlora. In antiquity, the surrounding walls were rebuilt, and gradually in the Middle Ages (IX-X century) they were converted into an ecclesiastical-administrative center. It has been part of Byzantine, Normans, Anzhuine, and Serbian possessions. After the last ruler of Serbian origin Ivan Komnen Asen, Vlora and Kaninë were placed under the reign of the Albanian lords of Muzakaj, Balshay, and Aranitis. The last Albanian conqueror Rugjina Balasha, after finding the support of the Republic of Venice, was forced to leave it in 1417 in the hands of the Ottomans, together with the family and the people of the yard to find shelter on the island of Corfu. During the Ottoman reign in Sultan Sulaiman's time. Gjegju Sinan Pasha, the founder of the Vlora family dynasty, settled in Vlora and Kaninë. His descendants, who ruled the Sandzak of Berat and Vlora, raised their residence in the Castle of Canina. The descendant of this family, Ismail Qemali, declared the independence of the Albanian state and raised the national flag in Vlora on November 28, 1912 Kanina's perimeter wall follows the natural relief of the hill and encircles a surface of 3.6 ha. Being a fortified center of antiquity in the Middle Ages, the fortification has recognized several stages of construction in accordance with the style and construction technique of the respective periods from the IVth century BC. V-VI anno domini until the 13th-14th century. At the last stage the wall is equipped with towers that have different shapes, such as quadrilateral, polygonal, semicircular, triangular and counter-towers. There were three entrances to the fortification walls of the castle. The internal organization of the ancient and medieval settlement of Kanina, which was concentrated within the fortification, is very little known, thanks to the excavations carried out between 1971-1977 by the archaeologist Damian Komata. By the Turkish traveler Evlija Çelebi at the end of the century. XVII, we learned that within the surrounding walls there were about 300 stone houses, the mosque of Sultan Mehmed the 2nd, as well as Gazi Sinan Pasha's magnificent building nera it in the western part, the Citadel was located, which was connected to the rest of the castle by a gate to its east. Outside the fortification in the south and east there was a fortress (the neighbourhood outside the walls surrounding the castle). The castle began to gradually lose its strategic importance in the mid-century, XVI, after the Skela fortress was built in Vlora. It was damaged by the Venetian bombing in 1690 and in the beginning of the nineteenth century, the castle was abandoned. Its further destruction was caused by the bombing of the Italian army in World War I and during the Vlora War in 1920.
