The building most probably dates back to the 15th century, and was built by the community of Castello, to which it once belonged. The church sports a pavilion vaulted portico outside. Inside, the choir houses a 17th century wooden altar with a picture of Saint Gregory and Saints, probably by Francesco Matteazzi, and an altar frontal in carved and golden wood featuring an oil on leather, 17th-18th century Annunciation in the center. The frescoed apse walls display Saint Leonard of Limoges on the left and Saint Gregory the Great on the right, both dating back to the late 15th - early 16th century. The walls of the aisle display large, fine frescoes by Friulian painter Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo which can be dated back to the late 15th century. The eight surviving portions display the Passion of Jesus: these depict the Entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Agony in the Garden and Taking of Christ on the left wall, while Jesus encounters Veronica (or Christ Carrying the Cross), the Crucifixion, Entombment of Christ and Resurrection can be seen on the right wall. With their vivid colors, the pictures are reminiscent of prints from Northern Europe and stand out with their fresh and dramatic realism. In the apse there is a copy of the wooden sculpture Saint Nicholas Enthroned by Bartolomeo di San Vito - also known as Bartolomeo Dall'Occhio - dated 1503.
