Art Gallery - Stara Zagora
The Art Gallery of Stara Zagora currently occupies a spacious exhibition area of 1,200 square meters and houses a collection of over 4,000 artworks. The collection is categorized into six divisions, including Painting, Graphics, Sculpture, Icon Painting, Renaissance Engravings, and Applied Arts. These divisions showcase works by Bulgarian artists spanning the past two centuries. The concept of establishing an art gallery in Stara Zagora originated in the late 19th century, associated with Anton Mitov, who later became a notable figure in Bulgarian Fine Arts. By 1908, this idea had been realized, and an art collection was established within the 'Augusta Traiana' Archaeological Society. The inaugural artwork in the collection was a portrait of the revolutionary Kolyo Ganchev, painted by artist Nikola Stoenchev. Over the years, the art collection expanded, and in the 1950s, steps were taken to separate it from the History Museum and transform it into an independent cultural institution. By 1959, this transformation was complete, with additional works transferred from schools, community centers, and associations to enrich the gallery's collection.
