The Addison Sod House, a historic site in Saskatchewan, is over a century old and recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada.
Located 10 miles (16 km) north of Kindersley, Saskatchewan, and 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east on Highway 21, the sod house was originally used by James Addison and his family. The homestead included a barn, two sheds, a shelterbelt, and a dugout. Built in the early 1900s (1909–1911), sod houses were a common choice for homesteaders and functioned similarly to earth-sheltered homes. Unlike earth-sheltered houses built into hills, 'soddies' had their bases dug about 3 feet (0.91 m) below ground level, covered with buffalo, oxen, or cattle chips and a layer of clay. The walls, made from overlapping pieces of sod, provided insulation and protection against harsh weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
This particular sod house survived due to several unique features. James Addison used sod from a dried-up area, which had thicker grass roots, and drilled holes in each sod piece to ensure it crumbled inward rather than outward as it dried. The walls were built triangularly, wider at the base and narrower at the top, and the roof was made of wooden shingles instead of sod, which protected against water damage. The walls were initially covered with vines, then cedar shingles, and later asphalt and vinyl siding.
James Addison and his descendants have lived in the house since its construction. In 2017, the family was honored with a heritage stewardship award from Saskatchewan's lieutenant governor.
