The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (Romanian: Academia de Științe a Moldovei) was established in 1961 and serves as the primary scientific organization in the country, overseeing research in various fields of science and technology. Ion Tighineanu has held the position of head since April 9, 2019. The history of the Academy dates back to June 1946 when the Moldovan Research Base of the USSR Academy of Sciences was set up in Chisinau. Later, in October 1949, it became the Moldavian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The official inauguration of the Academy took place on August 2, 1961. A meeting in September 1994 confirmed the scientifically reasoned opinion of philologists that the correct name of the state language of Moldova is Romanian. Since September 2009, the University at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova has been operational in the country. In October 2017, President Igor Dodon signed a law to reform the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
