Seosomun was one of the busiest places in the capital of Joseon, as it led to the Chilpae Market outside the Namdaemun Gate. Back then, public executions were carried out in busy places to raise awareness and deter crimes. For this reason, the four streets outside Seosomun Gate had long been used as a public execution ground of Hanyang (now Seoul) since the Joseon Dynasty. Peter Yi Seung-hun, the first Korean to be baptized, Augustinus Jeong Yak-jong, a lay leader and Columba Kang Wan-suk along with many Catholics were martyred at this site. The number of martyrs whose names were identified was 98. Among them were 44 martyrs who were canonized to sainthood: 41 from Gihae Persecution (1839) including Paul Jeong Ha-sang and Ignacio Kim Je-jun, father of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, and three from the Byeongin Persecution (1866). As 27 martyrs who were beheaded here were beatified in 2014, this place became the largest martyrs' site in Korea where the most saints and blessed were born in a single place. The Korean Catholic Church planned to build a martyrs' shrine in Seosomun Park to commemorate the canonization of 103 Korean martyrs in 1984, setting up the current Martyrs Memorial Tower in 1999. The project of turning this historic site into a tourism resource started in 2011 and consequently the Seosomun Shrine History Museum officially opened on June 1, 2019.
