Rishiri is an island off of Japan's north western tip, 20 km ferry ride off of the most northern main island of Hokkaido. In the center of the island is Mount Rishiri, a dormant volcano that is the only peak on the small island creating a very stunning presentation, elevation of 1,721 meters directly out of the sea. This article speaks about the history of the island of Rishiri, of the importance of fishing for livelihood, present day decline due to depleted fish stocks, challenges due to decreasing as well as aging population. Tourism plays an important present day role, summer being the high season. But winter remains a unique time to visit, with powder skiing and other winter activities.
