Rebuilt in 1867, Geunjeongjeon Hall, or Hall of Diligent Governance, was the main hall of the palace for important national meetings and events. The hall has a spacious inner courtyard surrounded by cloisters. Government officials stood on the rank stones places in the stone pavement of the courtyard according to their rank. Rank stones placed in two rows, and natural granite pavestones presented a symbolic image of the place. Outside of Geunjeongmun Gate (south gate of Geunjeongjeon), there is another courtyard enclosed by outer cloisters. There are no other structures in the vicinity except for the king's path over Geumcheon Stream which demands ascetic dispositions from the people and the king after crossing. The two-story ceiling renders dignity and grandeur to the throne set in the front center of Geunjeongjeon Hall. Heungnyemun Gate, the outer cloisters, and Youngjegyo Bridge were restored in 2001.
