Professor Rudolf von Bernhard, the director of St. Petersbourg Civil Engineering Institute, commissioned his son Edwin and architect Paul Alisch to reconstruct his three-storey house in Tallinn. As a result of the work, accomplished 1878-1879, the building obtained a Gothic Revival facade and imposing stairs. There was one apartment on the first floor and the other on the second, connected by a spiral staircase. The new building was connected to an authentic tower in the medieval city wall. The storeys of the tower were given groin vaults. Apartments built according to state-of-the-art technology of the time consisted of a parlour, guest room, dining room, bedroom and a study located in the tower. The bald facade of graphic rustication is enlivened by diversely shaped windows, niches, arches and a protruding porch on the corner. In the central niche, over the first floor window, is a relief portrait of the owner Rudolf von Bernhard.
