Premantura

Premantura, known historically as Promontorium Polaticum and Promontore before adopting its current name, is a quaint village nestled in Istria's southernmost region. Positioned atop a hill, surrounded by the sea, it has undergone numerous governmental changes due to its strategic location. Over the 20th century, the village witnessed shifts across six distinct political regimes or states. Renowned for their skill in catching a delectable type of crab, Premantura is intimately linked with Cape Kamenjak, a nearby peninsula famed for its natural beauty and diverse ecosystem. Cape Kamenjak, a protected area since 1996, spans 3400 meters in length, with a width varying between 500 to 1200 meters, boasting 30 kilometers of stunning coastline, secluded bays, and beaches. This peninsula harbors an array of protected and endemic flora and fauna, including orchids, butterflies, the Mediterranean monk seal, and ancient dinosaur footprints—remarkable relics dating back more than 90 million years. The village's population, as per the 2021 census, stood at 819 inhabitants, compared to 768 recorded in 2011.
