Pićan, known as Pedena in Italian, Pićon in Chakavian, and Pičen in Slovene, is a village and municipality located in the central part of Istria, Croatia, about 12 km southeast of Pazin, at an elevation of 360 meters. The area is primarily focused on agriculture and livestock breeding. Pićan is situated along the D64 state road, which connects Pazin, Kršan, and Vozilići, and it also has a railway station on the now-defunct Lupoglav – Raša railway line.
In Roman times, the site was home to a military stronghold called Petina. From the 5th to the 18th century, Pićan served as the seat of the first diocese in central Istria and was a medieval commune with its own governors and officers. The town gate, dating back to the 14th–15th century, has been preserved, and many of the local bishops are buried within the church nave. The church's bell tower, which stands 48 meters tall, is separate from the main structure. It is the third-highest bell tower in Istria and offers impressive views of the surrounding area.
The church's treasury houses valuable artifacts, including chalices from the 15th century and a monstrance from the 16th century. Sebastijan Glavinić of Glamoč, who was the bishop of Senj-Modruš and was born in nearby Potpićan, was buried in St. George's Church in Slovenske Konjice, Slovenia.
Martin of Pićan, a former bishop of Pićan, served as the general vicar of Carniola with his seat in Ljubljana (then known as Laibach) before the Diocese of Ljubljana was established in 1461. He was buried in St. Nicholas's Church in Ljubljana in 1456, which was the predecessor of the modern Ljubljana Cathedral, where his gravestone can still be found today.
According to the 2021 census, the population of Pićan was 1,722, with 304 residents living in the village itself. This reflects a slight decrease from the 2011 census, which recorded a population of 1,827.
