Palazzo Carciotti is an eighteenth-century palace in Trieste, located in the city centre, at the beginning of the Grand Canal (Canal Grande). The building was built on an area once used for salt pans. The client was the Greek merchant Demetrio Carciotti, who settled in Trieste in 1775. Enriched by the trade in Bohemian cloths, at the end of the eighteenth century he bought the five houses that stood on the right side of the canal entrance. For the construction of this palace, Carciotti entrusted the architect Matteo Pertsch, who presented his project in 1798. The building work began immediately, which was supervised by Giovanni Righetti, which lasted until 1805. On the facade facing 'via Cassa di Risparmio' appears the inscription DEMETRIO CARCIOTTI MDCCC, the year in which that part of the building was completed. Over the years, modifications and restorations took place, in particular the plasterwork of the facades and the stone plinth were redone. The elevation of the third floor on the internal side was created for the technological needs of the offices housed in the building. In 1816 the minister Metternich (Klemens von Metternich ) stayed for a short time at Palazzo Carciotti. In 1831 the building became the first headquarters of Assicurazioni Generali, then housed the Austro-Hungarian Bank , offices of the Allied Military Government and the Port Authority. In 1918 the Austrian government , during the metal requisition phase, had the copper cladding removed from the dome. Currently the building houses some offices of the Municipality
