On the evening of February 26, 2021, insurgents took residents of Quirinde, Palma district, by surprise during dinner time. As residents fled, seven individuals lost their lives, with three of them falling victim to beheadings. The insurgents not only wrought destruction on homes but also pillaged food and other goods. Situated as a coastal village north of Palma town, approximately six kilometers east of Quionga (which faced an insurgent attack on February 19), Quirinde became a focal point of violence. Reports suggest that helicopters, possibly belonging to government forces or contractors, pursued the attackers in Quirinde, resulting in an unknown number of casualties. Responding to the situation, the government deployed two battalions of the police Rapid Intervention Unit to the area, aiming to thwart potential insurgent attacks on the route between Palma and the Tanzanian border, as stated by Pinnacle News. Additionally, Quirinde residents took matters into their own hands during the week, capturing two alleged insurgents and subjecting them to a beating before handing them over to authorities, according to Pinnacle News.
