On May 27, 2018, in Mondlane village, Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique, suspected Islamist militants beheaded at least 10 people, including children. Monjane is a hub for mining and petroleum. The attackers were part of a local Islamist group, al-Shabab (distinct from the Somali group), known since 2015 for sporadic attacks and revenue generation from timber and ruby sales. During the assault, the village leader was targeted for aiding the police against al-Shabab. The group's early members were followers of a radical Kenyan preacher. Authorities arrested 200+ individuals linked to these militants. Mosques were reopened if they severed ties with armed groups, while others linked to fundamentalism were demolished. The government passed anti-terrorism legislation with up to 24 years' imprisonment.
