Mundare is a town in central Alberta, Canada, located about 70 km (43 mi) east of Edmonton at the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 855, and 2 km (1.2 mi) north of the Yellowhead Highway. The Canadian National Railway runs through the town, with Beaverhill Lake to the southwest and Elk Island National Park 30 km (19 mi) west of Mundare.
Mundare was named after William Mundare, a railway station agent. The town celebrated its 100th anniversary in July 2007 with a three-day event.
According to the 2021 Census by Statistics Canada, Mundare had a population of 689 in 301 of its 352 private dwellings, reflecting a 19.1% decrease from 2016 when the population was 852. The town covers 4.12 km² (1.59 sq mi), with a population density of 167.2/km² (433.1/sq mi) in 2021. In the 2016 Census, the town had a population of 852, with a density of 202.4/km² (524.1/sq mi).
Mundare hosts the Basilian Fathers' Museum, which showcases the history of Ukrainian settlement and the Basilian Fathers' Mission in east-central Alberta. The museum houses rare 16th and 17th-century liturgical books from Ukraine. Nearby is the 'Grotto' or 'Golgotha of Mundare,' a garden and shrine built by the Basilian Fathers in 1934.
The town is also famous for the world’s largest garlic sausage (kovbasa), built at a cost of $120,000.
