Morundae Peninsula is a well-known scenic site located at the southern end of Busan near the estuary of the Nakdonggang River. Until the 16th century, this peninsula was a separate island, but it became connected to the mainland through a gradual accumulation of soil and sand. The name Morundae means the 'Place that Vanishes in the Clouds,' because the peninsula seems to disappear on cloudy and foggy days. This place has long been famous for the scenic beauty created by its dense vegetation, unusually shaped rocks, and picturesque sandy coast. The rock has 90 species of trees, including the black pine, and is a habitat of paradise flycatchers, seagulls, and many species of migratory birds. The northern part of the peninsula is known for its beach, and the southern part of the rock features a cave formed through erosion caused by the sea waves. In 1798, a stele commemorating the military official Jeong Un (1543-1592), who heroically died in the Battle of Busan during the Japanese invasion of 1592, was erected on the peninsula.
