Trepča Mines
Miners at the Trepca Mines in Kosovo, a historic complex dating back to the Roman era, have gone on strike to demand better working conditions and timely payment of salaries. The complex, once one of the largest companies in the former Yugoslavia, has faced economic difficulties since the Kosovo War and Kosovo's declaration of independence. Miners, who work in dangerous conditions with outdated equipment, receive salaries ranging from $740 to $950 per month, higher than the Kosovo average but insufficient for their perilous work. They lack health and life insurance, and prices have risen in recent years. Dissatisfied with deteriorating conditions and unresponsive management, around 200 miners launched a strike on October 24, with some even holding a hunger strike. Their demands include better pay, dismissal of current management, and improved working conditions. Despite facing suspensions, the miners are determined to continue their strike until their demands are met. International unions have expressed support for their cause. Kosovo's Economy Ministry called for their return to work, citing recent wage increases.
