Love locks are a symbol of eternal love. It is believed that this ancient custom originates from China, but today there are cities all over the world filled with fences, bridges and poles adorned with padlocks. In Europe, they started to appear in the early 2000s. In Rome, the ritual of love locking at the Ponte Milvio bridge can be attributed to the book I Want You by Federico Moccia, later adapted into a film entitled Ho voglia di te. It is believed that if both members of a couple are not present when the lock is locked, their love will be forever jinxed. In Italy, the vow of love includes the words per sempre (forever), spoken as the key is thrown into a river. This custom quickly spread all over the world and locks became tokens of love - universal symbols of commitment, strength and steadiness of a relationship. There are also websites that list the places with love locks around the globe. In February 2011, the month of love, young people of Dubrovnik started a new trend of affixing locks to the fence at Boninovo, a viewpoint at the center of the city, to mark Valentine's Day. Young couples put locks of different colors, shapes and designs on the fence. Some are unmarked, but most have engraved hearts and initials of couples who locked them as a lasting symbol of their love. As the number of love locks is constantly rising, they have become a minor city landmark and a new tourist attraction. This is how Boninovo became a place where young people vow eternal love.
