Loon Lake is a small village in Saskatchewan, Canada, with a population of 281 according to the 2021 Census. Situated within the Rural Municipality of Loon Lake No. 561 and Census Division No. 17, it lies along Highway 26, northeast of Lloydminster. The Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation reserve is located just east of the village.
In 2016, Loon Lake had a population of 288, showing a 9% decrease from its 2011 population of 314. The village, incorporated on January 1, 1950, spans 0.74 km² (0.29 sq mi) and had a population density of 379.7/km² (983.5/sq mi) in 2021.
Steele Narrows, located approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) from the village on Makwa Lake, is the site of the Battle of Loon Lake—the final battle of the North-West Rebellion on June 3, 1885. This battle ended with the defeat of the Cree First Nations band and is now commemorated as a National Historic Site within Steele Narrows Provincial Park.
The village features a 9-hole golf course with grass greens and a licensed dining area. Basic services such as postal, food, gas, and banking are available. Nearby, Pine Cove and Makwa Lake resorts offer cabin rentals. Just 5 km west of Loon Lake is Makwa Lake Provincial Park, and on Jumbo Lake, Silver Birch Bible Camp operates.
The area surrounding Loon Lake is rich with recreational opportunities, boasting seven freshwater lakes within an 8 km (5 mi) radius. Additionally, the region offers big game hunting every fall, with several outfitters operating within a 16 km (10 mi) range of the village.
