Located on cape Skamni, the prominent section of the Sozopol Peninsula, this archaeological site has a rich history that was uncovered during excavations conducted between 2011 and 2015:
1. The excavations revealed remnants of an ancient sanctuary known as the Thesmophorion, dating from the late 6th to the 3rd century BC, which was dedicated to Demeter and her daughter Kore – Persephone.
2. Among the discoveries were remains of a late antique and medieval fortress wall, complete with a polygonal tower.
3. In the early 11th century AD, a small chapel called a 'martyrium' was erected. Later, in the 12th century AD, a three-nave basilica was constructed, serving as the centerpiece of a sprawling monastery complex that remained active until the early 15th century AD.
4. Extensive research was also conducted on a sizable Christian burial ground, where more than 180 funerals were studied.
5. Between the 16th and 18th centuries AD, a small Turkish garrison was stationed at the site, but during the Revival period, Christian traditions were revived. This period saw the construction of a small chapel and the establishment of Sozopol's first secular school.
