Shiloh Church

Located about 30 kilometers north of Maidstone in the Rural Municipality of Eldon No. 471, Charlow (Shiloh) Baptist Church and Cemetery occupies roughly one hectare of land. Nestled in a grove of trees and shrubs, the site features a one-room log building and an adjoining cemetery.
This heritage site is deeply tied to the early African American community in Saskatchewan. In 1910, approximately 12 Black families from Oklahoma, seeking refuge from racial segregation and discrimination after the American Civil War, settled in Saskatchewan. Drawn by the promise of free land, these families established themselves in the Eldon district, forming the core of a new community.
In 1912, they constructed the Shiloh Baptist Church using dovetailed, hand-hewn poplar logs transported from the North Saskatchewan River by ox cart. This modest log building, complete with handmade benches and a pulpit, served as a vital social and religious center for the community. It is notable as the only log church built by Black pioneers in Saskatchewan and remained active until the mid-1940s when the community began to disperse.
Adjacent to the church is the only African American cemetery in Saskatchewan, in use from 1913 to 1945. It contains approximately 37 graves of Shiloh community members, originally marked by large stones. Today, the graves are distinguished by white wooden crosses. The cemetery remains a significant link between the Shiloh community's descendants and their ancestors.
Declared a provincial heritage site in 2019, the Shiloh Baptist Church has been extensively renovated and is now open for self-guided tours. Visitors are encouraged to sign the guest book and make donations to support the site's upkeep.
