Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas the Great founded the parish church of Naujieji Trakai (New Trakai) in 1409. The Gothic-style sanctuary, which has thick stonework and once formed part of the Trakai defence complex, acquired many features of early baroque during its reconstruction in the 17th century. Vytautas himself is believed to have presented the church with its renowned painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Infant. Historical sources say that not only Catholic and Orthodox believers but also local Muslims have venerated the painting for more than six centuries. The Trakai Madonna was painted in the 15th century based on the icon Nikopia (Greek for 'She who brings Victory'), which the Byzantine Emperors considered to be their guardian. In 1718, Pope Clement XI commissioned special gold crowns for the image of Our Lady of Trakai. Today copies of this miraculous Trakai Madonna can be found in the sanctuaries all over Lithuania, as well as in Latvia and Belarus. Each year on 15 August (the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and 8 September (the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) special indulgence feasts, known as 'Trakines', are held at the church.
