Lëkurësi Castle, also known as Kalaja e Lëkurësit in Albanian, stands as a ruined fortress adjacent to the town of Sarandë in the southern region of Albania. Perched strategically atop a hill, the castle's vantage point grants commanding views over Sarandë and extends southeastward to encompass the islands of Ksamil. Construction of Lëkurësi Castle dates back to 1537, a creation attributed to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent from the Ottoman Empire. Its purpose was to serve as a defensive bastion against Venetian forces. The castle boasted a garrison of 220 soldiers and occupied a significant segment of the traditional Himara region's southern territory. In the late 1700s, the castle faced an assault led by Ali Pasha of Ioannina (Ali Pasha Tepelena), accompanied by the plundering of the neighboring settlements. Formerly encompassing the ancient village of Lëkurës, the castle exhibits a square layout with two circular towers adorning its northwest and southeast corners. Visitors seeking entrance to the castle embark on a journey by detouring from the primary route at Qafë Gjashtë, ascending the town's opposite hillside. Modern amenities catering to tourists, including a restaurant and more, have been erected in proximity to the castle, maintaining a consistent architectural style with the historical structure.
