Jūrkalne is located near the intersection of highways P111 (Ventspils ( Leči ) - Grobiņa) and P119 (Kuldīga - Alsunga - Jūrkalne). Its former German name was Feliksberg (Felixberg), but its former Latvian name was Medeņciems (Meddenzeem). During the Napoleonic Wars, on May 15, 1809, a battle between English and Danish sailors took place on Jūrkalne beach. From 1872, the three-year Jūrkalne maritime school operated here, which trained long-distance helmsmen and short-distance captains until the First World War. There is a folk house and a library in Jūrkalne and the elementary school was closed in 2016. The Jūrkalne Church is located in the village. There is a beach near the village with a 20-meter high cliff.
