Jo Man-sik was born in Gangeo-gun, Pyeongannam-do on February 1, 1883. After graduating from Sungsil Middle School in Pyeongyang and the Department of Law, Meiji University, Japan, Godang (his pen-name also spelled Kodang) was engaged in activities for the nation and the state in Korea when many independence leaders left Korea and went overseas. Godang was imprisoned for his role in the March 1st independence movement at Gangseo Morak-jang. He served in many posts including, President of Jeongju Osan Middle School, director of the YMCA, founding president of the Society for the Encouragement of Native Products (Mulsan Jangnyeohoe), elder of Pyeongyang Sanjonghyeon Church, Central Committee member and Pyeongyang Branch President of New Trunk Association (Singanhoe), founder of Sungin Commercial School, President of Gwansen Sports Association, and president of the Chosun-ilbo. In these posts, Godang revived the national soul and carried out non-violent resistance activities against Japanese imperialism. After the Liberation from the Japanese Occupation, Godang organized the Joseon Democratic Party to build a liberal democratic and unified nation. He died in 1950 as he fought against the Soviet army and communists. He had refused to move to the south as the people in the northern part of Koreas were suffering. He received the Order of Merit for the National Foundation (Geonguk Hunjang). The grade of the order that he received was Dachan Minguk Jang (the Order of the Republic of Korea).
