Jeonggwang Jeonghyewon is a temple founded in 1917 by a Japanese monk named Dohyeon under the name of Heungseonsa Temple. After Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the temple was renamed Jeonggwang Jeonghyewon and is currently registered with Baekyangsa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. In its compound, there are still a seated statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which was built as a Gyeongju Buddhist monument in the late , and a statue of Samamtabhadra Bodhisattva and a stone pagoda built in 1931. The roof tiles and some windows have been replaced, but the overall structure of the temple remains intact as it was originally built. Unlike traditional Korean temples, which kept distance between the main hall and the Yosachae, it connected the main hall and the Yosachae along the gate and hallway around the Jungjeng. This is a typical Japanese Garam layout with both worship and living spaces in one building, and Jeonggwang Jeonghyewon is the only temple in Korea with such a layout. Jeonggwang Jeonghyewon is a historic temple that was led by Manam Daejongsa (1876-1957) and Great Monk Seowong (1912-2003). In addition, it is a place where Monk Beopjeong (1932-2010) known for his 'No Possesion' spirit decided to become a monk when he engaged in the Buddhist Youth Association as a college student.
