Haenyeo Museum
Jeju Haenyeo are female divers who gather food from the sea. They are called jomyeo, jomsu, and jamsu and have been attracting attention as a worldwide quite rare occupational people. The Haenyeo are significant players in the Jeju economy through bakgat-muljil (going to dive in countries and regions outside of Jeju), visiting across the country as well as to Japan and Russia, with their persistent vitality and strong pioneering spirit. It was the Jeju haenyeo who launched Korea's largest female anti-Japanese movement in 1932 against the exploitation of Japanese imperialism. The Haenyeo Museum was built in 2006 on this historical site, for preservation of the value of the Jeju female diver culture.
