In the years 1919-1921 and 1927-1939, August Maramaa was Viljandi legendary mayor, and city deputy in the years 1921-1927. August Maramaa (Marfeldt) was born on April 6, 1881, in Tartu County. As mayor August Maramaa was dedicated to shape Viljandi into an inland city with developed business and industry. Avenues, parks, streets, new districts, EVE hotel, new city hall, the suspension bridge in the castle hills, four schools, a hospital, a stadium, and a beach building were built under Maramaa's leadership. Even today many of Maramaa's bold ideas are still put into practice. In 1938, the President of the Estonian Republic presented August Maramaa the Order of the Estonian Red Cross III class. In 1941, January 8, August Maramaa was arrested and sent to Siberia to a prison camp. August Maramaa died on December 26, 1941, in the Kirov region. In 1996, Viljandi City Council chose August Maramaa Viljandi city's second honorary citizen after general Johan Laidoner. In Viljandi several different businesses are connected to the name August Maramaa: the contest of solving mathematics problems for school students (1992), the Maramaa avenue (1991) and the Maramaa scholarship (1999).
