Mucojo
In the year 2021, there was a resurgence of insurgent violence in the coastal Macomia district. On the 22nd of October, a group of five civilians, having ventured from Ilha Matemo into Macomia district to find fresh water, were ambushed by insurgents at a well in Lumumua (possibly Olumbua), near Mucojo on the coastline. Tragically, two of the civilians were beheaded, while the remaining three managed to flee. Additionally, another report indicated that between the 21st and 22nd of October, insurgents beheaded two more civilians in the vicinity of Mucojo. These incidents mark a return to the previous pattern of attacks witnessed in August and early September, where civilians seeking access to natural resources along the Macomia coast encountered violent confrontations with small insurgent groups. Many of these insurgents seemed to be in transit following joint operations by Rwandan and Mozambican forces that displaced numerous insurgents in the Mocimboa da Praia district.
