Pangane
In the year 2021, on the 26th of October, Mozambican forces fatally shot at least 10 (with some reports claiming over 20) civilian fishermen off the northern coast of Macomia district. These fishermen, originally from Ilha Matemo in Ibo district, had recently landed in the Macomia village of Pangane to collect fresh water. Upon their arrival, authorities attempted to halt them, accusing the fishermen of breaching a ban on maritime activities north of Ilha Matemo and the prohibition of civilians in Pangane. In an attempt to escape, the men fled back to the sea, prompting Mozambican forces to pursue and ultimately open fire, resulting in the death of all but two fishermen. Reports indicate that despite the well-known bans on maritime activities in northern Macomia, Mocímboa da Praia, and Palma districts, individuals from Ilha Matemo and surrounding areas continue to fish in these regions due to a lack of alternatives for sustenance and income.
