Data Point related to: CITY/TOWN
In April 2021, fires continued to ravage Palma, witnessing several incidents of buildings and homes being set ablaze on the nights of April 26 and 27. On the second night, a mosque fell victim to the flames. While some reports pointed fingers at government forces for certain house burnings, multiple sources informed Zitamar News that the insurgents were primarily responsible for the majority of the arson. Locals revealed that insurgents notified civilians about targeted areas slated for burning, providing them with a deadline to evacuate. The insurgents claimed that the destruction was part of their strategy to seize control of Palma town. By April 30, mobile phone service in Palma once again ceased, hampering the collection of reports from the area. Nonetheless, there were accounts of clashes occurring between insurgents and government forces within Palma.
