In 1782, when Johann Schultz served as the palace architect, the earlier wooden kitchen house dating back to 1754 was demolished, leaving only the stone core with fireplaces and bread baking ovens. The exterior stucco finish of the new oblong stone building with its hipped roof was still completed in the Baroque style, as were the windows with small panes installed in the window apertures. The reconstruction giving the building the current exterior appearance took place in 1828. The previous hipped roof with six chimneys was replaced by a mansard floor, which is similar to that in the guest house. After being destroyed in a fire on the mansard floor the building, which had been used in the XX century as an apartment building, was refurbished into a branch of the Estonian Art Museum. In 1996 the museum displaying the Johannes Mikkel art collection was opened here.
