House A encompasses an area measuring ca. 30 x 24meters. It is a substantial stone-built dwelling facing the street frontage. The center of the composition is marked by a square courtyard, surrounded by a lonic order peristyle and with the suites of rooms arranged around it. To the southern side were the main rooms of the house, one of them the andron (room reserved for men). In the western part of the house were the service rooms, to the north were the private living quarters of the family and the eastern side served as a storage space. In the southeastern corner of the house is located the cistern. The house was constructed in the mid third century BC, when the orthogonal urban plan was laid out in Byllis. The building was carried on in use till the second half of fourth century AD and was further elaborated, but always maintaining the main features of a perstyle house. During the reconstruction of the third century AD, the andron was paved with polychromic mosaics set in a geometric design. In the fifth century AD the house changed, being subdivided into smaller and apparently cruder units.
