Gongsanseong Fortress

  • Gongju

Gongsanseong is the name of the fortified capital of Baekje 18 BC-660, which was established after the kingdom moved its royal capital from Hanseong (present-day Seoul) to Ungjin (present-day Gongju) in 475. Built at a strategic location consisting of the ridges and valleys of Gongsan Mountain (110 meters) beside the Geumgang River, the fortress walls had a perimeter of 2,660 meters. The original structure was a combination of earthen and stone walls, but it was rebuilt only in stone during the Joseon Dynasty 1392-1910. The fortress was originally called Ungjinseong, but was renamed as Gongsanseong during the Goryeo period 918-1392, and again as Ssangsusanseong after the reign of King Injo. Archaeologists discovered various archaeological sites ranging from Baekje to Joseon inside the fortress, including Imnyugak Pavilion, a pond, and buildings presumed to have constituted the kingdom's royal palace, four gates (Geumseoru, Jinnamnu, Gongbungnu, and Yeongdongnu), Ssangsujeong Pavilion, Ssangsujeong Monument, the Monument to Three Ming Generals, Yeongeunsa Temple, a pond, and Manharu Pavilion. This historic fortress site became part of the Baekje Historic Areas, which was inscribed on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites on July 8th, 2015.
