Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882), Estonian writer and physician. His principal work is 'Kalevipoeg' (Son of Kalev), the national epic based on Estonian folklore. Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald was one of the leaders of the national awakening and founders of Estonian culture. The monument was first unveiled on December 28, 1952, at the historical site of the Tartu Statue of Liberty. When the Statue of Liberty was restored to its former site, this monument was removed here and unveiled on June 15, 2003. The authors of the monument are sculptors M. Saks and J. Hirv, and architects H. Karro, A. Mellik and M. Port.
