During the reign of Duke Jacob in the 17th century the Duchy of Courland was very well armed - every ship, manor and city was equipped with cannons. There were 1800 cannons in Courland at that time, from which only 43 remain today. One of them is located in Sabile and has been immured into the pavement. The cannon has a calibre of approximately 100mm.
