Dongducheon (동두천시) Station opened on the Gyeongwon Line on July 25, 1912. After the division of Korea, it had been the terminating stop of the South Korean section of the Gyeongwon Line. Now, it stands as the terminating stop of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1. The name of the station derives from Dongducheon Stream, which stems from the east of Tap-dong, Dongducheon-si and flows into Ganghwacheon stream. However, in 1984, the name was given to the newly constructed Eosudong station nearby, as the actual location of the original station was far from Dongducheon-si and the number of passengers using the Eosudong station increased. The original station was renamed to Dong-an Station. In December 2006, Eosudong Station was changed to Dongducheon Central Station and Dong-an Station renamed to Dongducheon Station. In the Japanese colonial era, Dongducheon (동두천시) Station was a transportation hub for coal and major commodities on the Gyeongwon line. As the U.S. military base took up 40% of the city area after the Korean War, Dongducheon-si became a military city. Once called the petit-America in Korea, it is also known as the birthplace of Korean rock. The city has held Rock festivals since 1999. Also, 'Add 4' led by Shin Jung-hyun, the first local rock band in Korea was formed and mainly performed in the city in its early days. To celebrate its cultural aspects, an exhibition hall and a concert hall featuring the history of Korean rock were established.
