Constructed between 1936 and 1937, the Szeged Heroes' Gate (Latin: Porta Heroum) stands as a neoclassical masterpiece, crafted to commemorate the 12,000 soldiers from Szeged who bravely sacrificed their lives in World War I. A gate structure, featuring three arched openings and supported by four pillars, spans across Boldogasszony súgarút. Positioned above the central arch, French windows with semicircular shutters catch the eye, adorned with parapets crafted from wrought iron swords. Running parallel to these, a robust masonry balcony serves dual purposes – a ceremonial speaking platform and a bearer of the inscription 'Porta Heroum 1914-1918,' accentuated by ribbon-like decorations. On the opposite side of the boulevard-facing main façade, the central arch is flanked by the inscription 'The Path of Progress Leads from a Glorious Past to a Triumphant Future.' On the gate's sides, sizable flag holders are perched atop pillars. Dominating the main façade, monumental stone statues portraying both living and fallen soldiers are elevated on similar pillars. Crowned by a flat roof, the gate structure hosts an uppermost flag holder. In the past, substantial antique bronze perpetual candleholders graced the store aisles. This gate, constructed in 1936, was masterminded by Móric Pogány. The statues of national guard soldiers, symbolizing the First World War victims, were meticulously crafted by sculptor Éva Lőte in 1937. The monument took the form of an expansive gateway that stretched over the beginning of Boldogasszony súgarút, spanning over the newly erected three-story teachers' boarding school at 1 súgarút and adjacent addresses 2-4. The architectural endeavors were overseen by András Erdélyi and Fiai, with Szeged architect István Ottovay also playing a role. The unveiling ceremony saw the esteemed presence of Governor Miklós Horthy as the guest of honor. The frescoes of the arch (the largest fresco in the country at the time) were made by Vilmos Aba-Novák.
