Chifte Banya - Contemporary Art Halls - City Art Gallery
Chifte Banya was built around 1580 during the rule of Sultan Murad III. As its name suggests (chifte means couple), it comprises a male and female departments. The main entrance of the male department was on the side of today's Shesti Septemvri Boulevard. In the middle of the spacious antechamber there was a large pool of water. There were smaller rooms with running hot and cold water and floor heating. The entrance to the female department, which is a separate compartment, is located on the opposite northside of the building. Here the decoration is poorer. The exterior walls of the building are adorned with cellular construction typical of the early Ottoman era. It contains secondary marble fragments of earlier buildings. Here was found the famous plate with the image of a lion and a lioness. Some researchers consider that there was an early Christian basilica at this place in the period between the 4th and the 6th centuries. The last restoration of the building was in 1999. Today it is an exhibition space for contemporary art of the City Art Gallery.
