Augusta Traiana is one of the biggest and most magnificent cities in Thrace in the 2-3rd century. The city has had an established urban plan since its foundation. The infrastructure of the streets is organized around the two main streets cardo maximus (direction north-south) and decumanus maximus (direction east-west). At first all streets were covered with gravel. Later, in the middle of the 2nd century, they were covered with big stone slabs with irregular rectangular shape.
Decumanus maximus begins from the southwestern gate of the town. The lane of the street is 6 m wide and the pedestrian area is on both sides north and south. The street including the sidewalks is 11 m wide. Beautiful pillar porticos arise on the sidewalks. Underneath them remains of 36 shops were discovered and for that reason the street could be labeled as the 'The market street of Augusta Traiana'.
