Hydro Power Plant Marijampolė

At the end of 1939, the City Council of Marijampolė decided to build a hydro power plant. In early spring of the next year the preparatory work began but an exact location of the dam still was not chosen. At first, it wanted to build the dam at the Vilkaviškis bridge but the Marian monks refused to sell the land inexpensively, therefore the current location was selected. The construction started in June. At the time once occupying force was being replaced by another, but the work did not stop. In 1942 the hydro power plant began its operation. The power plant was equipped with a 147 HP Kaplan water turbine and Czech 100kW power generator. German soldiers, retreating after an unsuccessful military campaign, in 1944 blew up the power plant's water turbine and the generator but the dam remained intact. The Soviet government decided to bring a French hydro unit from Kudirkos Naumiestis. Power generation for the town was restored. There was still a lack of power, therefore a Fulton electric diesel was allowed to be brought from Vilnius. This device weighed 150 tonnes, so its transportation and installation in our town was quite a big challenge. Firstly, the brought device was installed and only then a building was built around it. A black marble board '1955' integrated in the building's wall commemorated this event. After the big power plants were built in Lithuania, the small ones were no longer needed. The hydro power plant resumed operation and power production only in 1999. In 2015, during the art symposium 'Malonny - Marijampolė, London, New York, - Ray Bartkus, a New York artist, drew a painting named Flowing Life on the buildings of the hydro power plant.
