Nova Zambezia
At dawn on December 3rd, 2021, militants stormed into Nova Zambezia village in Macomia district, initiating an assault that reportedly led to the decapitation of a civilian and the destruction by fire of 16 residences, as per a local account. IS took responsibility for the incident, claiming that one Mozambican soldier was slain by the insurgents. Nova Zambezia is positioned along the N380, situated south of 5º Congresso and less than 20 kilometers north of Macomia town. Surprisingly, there's no documentation from an impartial source confirming the presence of government coalition forces defending the town, a detail that greatly frustrated residents following the attack.
