Article discussing an initiative between Volkswagen and the government of the Greek Island of Astypalea located in the Aegean Sea. The Island has a local population of 1300, and is 18km long and 13km at its widest. Its government is looking to open up the country for business with large corporations, and have a deal with Volkswagen. The taxis and rental cars are electric, all by Volkswagen. Part of Volkswagen's marketing approach is to make Astypalea one of the first areas in the world to be emission free traffic. Some people have voiced concern over the idea of green washing and what the greater corporate interests could be. Other concerns mentioned such as changes to the unique character of Astypalea or changes that could come due to an increase of visitors. But there is significant support being that tourism makes up a significant part of the job sector, with the idea that the publicity of the project will bring positive attention and encourage visits.
