Amnesty International has reported a grave incident in Burkina Faso, where the military allegedly carried out a deadly attack on civilians in the village of Karma on April 20th. The military entered the village in the morning, gathered residents' identity documents, and then opened fire on them, resulting in the deaths of at least 147 people, including 45 children. Survivors' testimonies point to the involvement of the 3rd Battalion of the Rapid Intervention Brigade (BIR). The military accused the villagers of not reporting armed group activities in the area. This incident may constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law, as it involves the deliberate targeting of civilians. Amnesty International has documented evidence, including photos of the victims and injured individuals, as well as reports of the military burning down buildings in the village. Soldiers continued to be deployed in the area, hindering the villagers' ability to bury the victims. The investigation into the Karma attack announced by the Public Prosecutor's Office must be impartial and independent to ensure accountability for these alleged war crimes and serious violations of human rights.
