After Bulgaria's release, as stated in the Berlin Treaty (1878), the country was divided into two parts. The southern region, known as Southern Rumelia, remained an autonomous province under Ottoman rule, with Plovdiv serving as its capital. Meanwhile, the Principality of Bulgaria was established in the northern region. This particular sculpture stands as a tribute to the merging of these two sections, uniting them into a singular nation following a series of uprisings across the province. Unveiled in 1985, on the centenary of these significant events, the statue portrays the motherland symbolically, embodying victory with a laurel wreath. Additionally, the statue's wings symbolize the two halves of Bulgaria. The square itself carries the name of this unification, while the boulevard is named after the date when the merging was successfully accomplished, September 6th.
